The Curious IC Mark on English Woodworking Planes.
IC in Old and Middle English,possibly also in London English is a first person nominative pronoun. Could it be that that this mark seen on a number of 18th century moulding planes, has in fact been added by the maker as a verification mark.
So why bother, the maker has already stamped his mark? Could it have been stamped by another authority to confirm makes name?
The mongram IC XC is formed from the first and last letters of Iesous Christos in greek, of the Roman Medieval periods.
Have posted this on different forums and have had some response,including from the know alls who state categorically it is just a religous mark.
If you have a plane with this mark, I would be interested in hearing from you. Would also be interested in any other information on this subject.
