Where to start, where to start?
Maybe a good starting point would have to be that great classic - Dictionary of Woodworking Tools - R.A. Salaman. A pretty exhaustive tool catalogue/dictionary starting at Basket Maker and finishing with Woodwind Instrument Maker. With of course sections on Carpenters Tools, Joiner and Cabinet Maker. Of course the section on Trugger maybe just escapes the term Carpenters Tools. So I suppose the debate is open on whether a Shipwright is a Carpenter or not, the great point being that both trades may use non specific planes and indeed specific planes for their work, however, I have yet to meet a Shipwright who would describe himself as a Carpenter.
