Antique and Vintage Tools Maybe we could start by defining antique A true antique (Latin: antiquus; 'old', 'ancient') is an item perceived as having value because of its aesthetic or historical significance, and often defined as at least 100 years old, however not everyone agrees with the 100 years. Antique and vintage tools generally come in two categories, useable and probably not being usable. Though clearly antique tools lend themselves to restoration and that may include setting an antique tool to working order. Just remember not all antique tools have significant value and in the case of many antique tools they may even, in good condition, never have been a good useable tool. I have a number of Harts Patent Planes, by nearly all definitions they are antique tools, they were never produced in quantity, probably because the end user had a simpler type available and the patent never was fully exploited. Many of our antique and vintage tools are sold as is, personally I am not into the gleaming brass and wood brigade, however they will all be clean.
